On March 24, Gothenburg welcomes a brand-new rooftop restaurant as Johanna opens on the seventh floor at Södra Hamngatan 49. Guests are met by a warm and inviting steakhouse, with the grill at its heart and a vibrant bar that sets the tone for the entire room.
At the very address where Leif Mannerström and Crister Svantesson once opened the classic restaurant Johanna, a new chapter is now being written. Much has changed – but not everything:
– A great restaurant is about the produce and the craft, and I am delighted that Johanna will once again be a place where the food takes center stage. I personally suggested bringing back the name Johanna. It is truly wonderful that our legacy can live on in an entirely new way, says Leif Mannerström.
The new Johanna will be an inviting steakhouse where, overlooking the city’s rooftops, guests can enjoy meat, fish, vegetables and seafood grilled over an open flame. For Head Chef Alexander Stärnerz, it was precisely the grill that made it an obvious decision to take on the kitchen at Johanna:
– The grill is the beating heart of the restaurant. Johanna should be a place with pulse and warmth, somewhere guests gladly return for the food, the atmosphere and the view. We will cook properly, using great produce with care for every guest – and hopefully put this address back on the culinary map, says Alexander Stärnerz.
A Bar with Warmth and Energy
The bar, combining warmth with energy, places special focus on Martinis – naturally in their classic form, but also in new signature versions. Johanna is just as much a bar as it is a restaurant, with 80 seats in the dining room and 40 at the bar. It should feel just as natural to stop by for a Vesper Martini as it is to order something from the grill and stay for the entire evening.
The interior features dark wood and soft materials. An open kitchen, custom-designed furniture and views across the city’s rooftops from every part of the space create an intimate atmosphere. With its wine room, several private dining rooms and a terrace opening in late spring, guests will discover new favorite corners of Johanna with every visit, all year round.
The overall experience is paramount – something General Manager Joey Thelin and Restaurant Manager Nora Juraskovic will place special emphasis on.
– Johanna should be a place for long-time regulars and curious newcomers alike – a restaurant you can rely on. You should be able to come up for a drink without planning ahead, or book dinner and make a full evening of it. It should feel lively, but never complicated. For business meetings, dates, celebrations and perfectly ordinary Tuesdays, says Joey Thelin.
Johanna opens on March 24.
